What you can do
- Upload an image from your computer, drag and drop it, or select one from your Shopify store media.
- Drag on the preview to draw a crop selection and search by a specific area of the image (for example, a single product in a lifestyle photo).
- Search by the full image or the selected area and browse the visually similar products the storefront would return.
- See each result’s rank and ranking scores directly on the result cards.
- Change pages or run new searches without re-uploading. The image stays loaded on the left while results update on the right.
Steps
- Go to Lab → Test Image Search.
- Provide an image in one of these ways:
- Drag and drop an image onto the upload area.
- Click Select image to select a file from your computer.
- Click Shopify media to select an existing image from your store’s media library.
- (Optional) On the preview, click and drag to draw a crop selection over the part of the image you want to search. The panel shows the selection size in pixels. Click Clear to remove the selection.
- Click the search button. It reads Search selection when a crop is active and Search full image otherwise. With a crop active, a secondary Search full image button lets you search the whole image without clearing the selection.
- Review the results on the right. The Last searched line under the buttons confirms whether the previous search used the full image or a selection. Click Change image to start over with a different image.
Result scores
Each result card shows how the image search ranked the product:- A #n badge on the product image shows the result’s rank position.
- A Score badge shows the product’s final ranking score.
- An Image sim badge shows the raw visual similarity between your image and the product’s images.
When to use crop
Use the crop selection when the source image contains more than one product, a busy background, or accessories you don’t want influencing the match. Narrowing the search area to a single item usually returns tighter, more relevant results than searching the whole scene.Tips
- Try different images to spot any gaps in your catalog coverage.
- If a lifestyle photo returns off-target results, crop to the specific product and search the selection instead.
- Selecting from Shopify media is a fast way to test how a real product image ranks against your own catalog.
