# Pinned products not appearing

> Work through the common reasons a pinned product doesn't show in its pinned position on a collection page, from sort and schedule mismatches to sold-out and filtered products.

Use this checklist when a product you pinned in a merchandising rule doesn't appear where you placed it on the storefront.

## Checklist

**1. Confirm the rule is applying at all**

Pins only show when the rule itself applies: it must be **Published**, built on the sort order the collection page loads with, and its conditions must match the shopper. If no part of the rule is showing, start with [Merchandising rule not applying](https://docs.uselayers.com/help/troubleshooting/rule-not-applying.md).

**2. Check the pin's own schedule and conditions**

Pins can have their own schedule and advanced conditions. Advanced conditions check the pinned product, not the shopper. For example, a pin that requires the product to be in stock stops serving for every shopper once the product sells out. A pin whose schedule hasn't started or has ended also stops serving, even though the rule is live. In the rule editor, a warning badge on the pin shows why it isn't serving, such as **Schedule ended** or **Condition not met**. See [See which pins aren't serving](https://docs.uselayers.com/platform/merchandising/pins.md#see-which-pins-arent-serving).

**3. Check that the product is still in the collection**

Pins are tied to the rule's collection. If the product was removed from the collection in Shopify, or a smart collection's conditions no longer include it, the pin stops affecting the page and is hidden from the editor. See [Pins are scoped to their collection](https://docs.uselayers.com/platform/merchandising/pins.md#pins-are-scoped-to-their-collection).

**4. Check stock and visibility**

* If **Delete Pins on Sell Out** is on, Layers removes the pin when the product sells out. Re-pin it once it's back in stock. See [Sell-out pin deletion](https://docs.uselayers.com/platform/merchandising/sell-out-deletion.md).
* If your store hides out-of-stock products, a sold-out product doesn't appear even while its pin exists.
* A product hidden by a [hidden products](https://docs.uselayers.com/platform/hidden-products.md) rule, an excluded tag, or market availability doesn't appear in any position.

**5. Check the shopper's filters**

Pinned products that don't match a shopper's active filters don't appear in the filtered results. Test the page without filters first.

**6. Look for overlapping variant breakouts**

If the pinned product also has a [variant breakout](https://docs.uselayers.com/platform/variant-breakouts.md) on the same collection, the breakout tiles and the pinned tile can compete for the same position. Pin the breakout tile you want to show, or remove the overlapping pin.

**7. Clear cached pages**

Changes reach the storefront within about a minute of saving. If you still see the old order, reload without your browser cache or open the page in a private window.

## What happens to pins when products sell out or launch later

* **Sold-out products:** the pin stays in place unless **Delete Pins on Sell Out** is on. Whether the product appears depends on your out-of-stock settings.
* **Unpublished or scheduled products:** you can pin draft and scheduled products ahead of a launch. They appear in their pinned positions once Shopify publishes them. See [Draft products and filtering](https://docs.uselayers.com/platform/merchandising/draft-and-filtering.md).
* **Pinning a style instead of one color:** pins target a specific product. Pinning a whole product family, so that an available color takes the place of a sold-out one, isn't supported yet.

## Banners not appearing

In-grid banners follow the same rules as pins: the rule must be live and match the shopper, and each banner can have its own schedule and audience. Banners can also be set up separately for desktop and mobile, so check the layout you're testing. Your theme must render banners from the Layers response. If a banner shows in the rule editor but never on the storefront, ask your developer to confirm banner rendering. See [Banners](https://docs.uselayers.com/platform/merchandising/banners.md).
