# Demote sale and final-sale products

> Move clearance, final-sale, or low-priority products toward the bottom of a collection without removing them.

Use a **Demote** expression when some products should stay available but shouldn't compete for the top of a collection, such as final-sale, clearance, or gift-card products.

## Before you begin

Make sure the products you want to demote share something Layers can match, such as a Shopify tag (for example `final-sale`), a product type, or a vendor.

## Demote products in a collection

1. Go to **Merchandise** → **Merchandising Rules** and create or open the rule for the collection and its default sort order.
2. In the **Expressions** tab, add an expression and set it to **Demote**.
3. Add a condition that matches the products, for example tags contains `final-sale`.
4. Save and publish the rule.

Matching products move to the bottom of the collection, still in the order of the base sort. See [Expressions](https://docs.uselayers.com/platform/merchandising/expressions.md).

## Demote across many collections

To apply the same demotion everywhere, add the expression to each collection's rule.

## Hide instead of demote

If products shouldn't appear at all, use [hidden products](https://docs.uselayers.com/platform/hidden-products.md) or a built-in exclusion tag instead. See [Catalog sync](https://docs.uselayers.com/shopify-integration/catalog-sync.md).

## Troubleshooting

* **Products aren't moving down.** Check that the rule is live on the collection's default sort. See [Merchandising rule not applying](https://docs.uselayers.com/help/troubleshooting/rule-not-applying.md).
* **A demoted product is still pinned near the top.** Pins take priority over expressions. Remove the pin.
