# Sort and filter by product reviews

> Connect your reviews app so you can sort, filter, and merchandise on star ratings and review counts.

Layers can bring review ratings and review counts from your reviews app onto your products. Once they're synced, you can use them like any other product data: sort by rating, filter to well-reviewed products, or boost products with lots of reviews.

## Prerequisites

* A reviews app installed on your Shopify store.
* Permission to manage store settings in Layers.
* For PowerReviews, your merchant ID and a read API key.

## Connect a supported reviews app

Layers has built-in connections for **Yotpo**, **Judge.me**, **Fera**, **Junip**, and **PowerReviews**.

1. Go to **Settings → Integrations**.
2. Find your reviews app under **Reviews** and turn it on.
3. Fill in any fields the app asks for. PowerReviews, for example, needs your merchant ID and a read API key.
4. Save, then wait for the next sync. Each integration has a sync page that shows the review data Layers has received so far.

Each connection syncs a **Review rating** and a **Review count** onto your products.

> [!NOTE]
>
> The **Okendo** integration brings in quiz responses, not review ratings. If you use Okendo reviews, follow the steps for apps without a built-in connection below.

## Use an app without a built-in connection

Many reviews apps save ratings to Shopify's standard product rating and rating count metafields. If yours does, add those metafields to Layers as product attributes. See [Metaobjects and metafields](https://docs.uselayers.com/shopify-integration/metaobjects-metafields.md). Ask your reviews app's support team where it stores ratings if you're not sure.

## Sort and merchandise on reviews

* **Sort by rating:** add the review rating to a [sort order](https://docs.uselayers.com/help/sort-orders/create-sort-order.md). Combine it with review count so a product with one five-star review doesn't outrank one with hundreds of four-and-a-half-star reviews.
* **Filter by rating:** create a filter from the review rating attribute. See [Facets](https://docs.uselayers.com/platform/facets.md).
* **Boost well-reviewed products:** use the rating or review count in a merchandising rule.

## Troubleshooting

### Stars are missing from product cards

Layers sends product data to your storefront, but your theme draws the product cards. If stars disappear after you switch a collection or search page to Layers, ask your theme developer to show stars from the review rating data Layers returns, instead of from the reviews app's own widget. See [Liquid integration](https://docs.uselayers.com/developers/liquid-integration.md).

### Products have no rating in Layers

* Check the integration's sync page to see whether Layers has received any review data.
* Products with no reviews have no rating. Decide how your sort order should treat them.
* New reviews appear after the next catalog sync.
